Criss Cross and Crossings
We are busy preparing for two concerts on the heels of one another, so please try to join us for at least one, and maybe both! Criss Cross is our joint collaboration with the wonderful Lakeside Singers. These professional adult singers move effortlessly from classical to pop music, and our Touring Chorus is partnering with them for a special concert at Lund Auditorium in River Forest on April 29th at 8:00 pm. Because we have had such fun with this group we have invited them to be our guests at our spring concert Crossings, on May 20th at 7:00 at Edman Chapel in Wheaton.

Since leaving the chorus, there have been some big changes. The first was when our family moved from Downers Grove to Tulsa, Oklahoma in the summer of 1999. There I finished high school in a small suburb. I sang in the school choir there and was even named King of the choir royalty during senior year, but it was never quite the same as Glen Ellyn or the excellent vocal program at Downers Grove South. After graduating, I attended DeVry University for two and a half years in pursuing an accounting degree. I came home to Tulsa in 2004 to regroup and save some money. I held a government job during 2004 and worked for a pharmacy in 2005 while preparing to enroll at Oklahoma State University to finish my degree starting this past fall. I never got there, however, as I landed one of my dream jobs working as a pipeline controller for British Petroleum (BP). I work a 12-hour rotating shift which is hard on the sleep schedule, but the pros far outweigh the cons and I am happy. It turns out that coming home for a break was the best thing that I could have done!! I still love to sing, and am currently preparing to perform an Italian piece at a friend's wedding. In my free time I enjoy playing in a weekly poker game (Texas Hold 'Em, of course!!), watching the Cubs make their 2006 World Series run (hey, I can dream), playing in a softball league with some guys from work, and golfing. I love to stay informed on all the GECC's activities, tours, and special events (like The Nightingale), and I wish I could be closer to Chicago and be more involved with the Chorus. My hope is to someday take a job with BP that moves me back to Chicago so I can enjoy more GECC performances, as well as more Cubs games!!

The air is warm, the sun is shining, and the daffodils are in bloom...ah! Just as spring brings fresh sights to winter-weary eyes, so the Chorus keeps encountering new -and renewing - experiences. Our CSO concert at the end of March went without a hitch, and included a personal letter from Maestro Kaufman to our singers thanking them for their marvelous sound and professionalism. Saturday April 8th brought hundreds of schoolchildren from four counties and their teachers to our annual Singfest for a day of rehearsing, sharing, and performing at day's end. Sanna Valvanne of Finland was our guest clinician and we had an invigorating day of movement and international song. The work from our staff and parent volunteers is extraordinary in organizing such an event each season! But the rewards of networking with area teachers, offering a high quality musical experience to all who come, building community, positively impacting music in the schools, and making new friends are well worth the effort. We're now in rehearsals for our new collaboration with the Lakeside Singers, and ever more daffodils of the musical kind are about to bloom. This promises to be a tasty and genuinely FUN event. Come on out!
